Preserving the Past for the Future
On August 11, 1923 Charlotte Dowd, her father Judson, her brother Wilbur, and friend Lousie Robinson left in Judson's Franklin touring car bound on a camping trip through the New England States to Canada.

The tonneau and running boards of the car were loaded with two auto tents, folding canvas cots, army blankets and pillows, aluminum mess kits, a gasoline stove , a few cooking utensils, a water bucket, suitcases, sweaters and overcoats.

They stopped in Middletown and Bristol to add three more people and a Stanley Steamer.

The men wore khaki shitrs and trousers and the girls knickers, middies and soft hats. One meal a day was eaten at a hotel or restaurant and the other two were prepared in camp, stopping in some village in the afternoon to purchase supplies.

One very important event of each day was choosing a camping place.
