March - April

Tue Mar 22 Weather fine Eggs: 24; 8 eggs from 9 pullets, 6 hens want to set. Was not feeling well this morning. Thought I would have to call doctor but haven't yet. Leonard stayed home from school. Grandma Scranton down to straighten things out.

Wed Mar 23 Good weather Eggs: 20, eggs $.32 a doz. Am glad my corn is all shelled. I am a little better. Leonard went to school. Aunt Mary come down. Letter, Josie at Fortress Monroe. Started on cellar of new school today.

Thu Mar 24 cold wet weather Eggs:17 Rested good last night. Done chores this morn. Got 2 pies $.50, 2 doz. buns $.40, 1 bread $.10, 2 doz crullers $.30, peck of oysters.

Fri Mar 25 Weather pleasant Eggs: 15 Received letter from Josie at Philadelphia. Hung up beef hams. Work progresses on Bonoff's store.

Sat Mar 26 Weather fine Eggs: 17 Kelsey brought load of wood. 30 years ago today my father died. Wood paid for in full.

Sun Mar 27 Foggy Eggs: 18 Frank was here today also George Whedon. Will Merrils called. Leonard went to Ninevah.

Mon Mar 28 Rain in eve, Hot sun 80 up Eggs: 16 Aunt Mary here. Made pies. Mother Scranton down. Brought pie and cake. Split wood, took away banking, carted away old pears.

Tue Mar 2 cold 28 Eggs: 17 Split wood gathered sunflower stalks for fire. Nathan called. Worked in house.

Wed Mar 30 Eggs: 14 Worked in house. Leonard split wood. Dug parsnips. Got letter from Josie. Sent reply.

Thur Mar 31 Eggs:16 Nathan called. Bull calf born. Sold calf May 23 weighed 200, $28.00. 1st calf May 31st.

Fri Apr 1 Eggs: 15 Eggs $.30 per doz Worked wood. No news from Josie.

Sat Apr 2 The Blank Days which follow have been days of weary waiting for Josie.

Mon Apr 4 Eggs: 14

Tue Apr 5 Eggs: 18 Washed, got in wood.

Wed Apr 6 Eggs: 15 Split wood. Swept out.

Thu Apr 7 Eggs: 16

Fri Apr 8 Eggs:14

Sat Apr 9 Eggs: 12

Sun Apr 10 Eggs: 16 Long day. George Whedon called.

Mon Apr 11 Eggs: 15

Tue Apr 12 Eggs: 14 Aunt Mary come to spend a few days with us. She makes us lots of good things to eat and is a real comfort to us.

Wed Apr 13 Eggs: 17

Thu Apr 14 Damp Eggs: 20

Fri Apr 15 Some foggy Eggs: 15 Worked at wood. Belle made us a call. Took home with her 2 hens.

 Sat Apr 16 A little damp. Eggs: 17 I split wood and got it in. Aunt Mary kept the pot boiling. Made rice pudding. Leonard has cold and sore throat. 

Sun Apr 17 Wet day Eggs: 16 About as usual here. Aunt Mary held the fort. I help.

Mon Apr 18 Wet Eggs: 18

Tue Apr 19 Damp, foggy Eggs: 26 Did not do much

Wed Apr 20 Wet, rainy Eggs: 19 Got wood in House, Split wood. Some letters from Josie. F. B. Meigs went to Doctor.

Thu Apr 21 Pleasant Eggs: 16 Got ashes out of cellar. Belle and Henry called. Sold 5 hens, 30 lbs., $.35 per lb., $10.50. F. B. Meigs went to New Haven.

Fri Apr 22 Pleasant, rain at night Eggs: 18 Got in all my wood. Hear nothing from F. B. Meigs. Mrs. Tucker called.

Sat Apr 23 Rain Eggs: 18 Letter and telegram from Josie. Leonard telegraphed. Nathan called.

Sun Apr 24 Pleasant Josie got home. Thank God we can see her. Aunt Mary went back to Miss Lee's. This day of joy turned sadness by a telegram from F. B. Scranton that he had fallen by the breaking of a ladder.

Mon Apr 25 Eggs: 13 Josie left this morning to go back to care for F. B. Scranton. Joy and sadness are it seems are closely mingled in lives. F. B. Meigs is in New Haven Hospital undergoing operation on his head. I am blessed with good health for one of my years, although I can not see to write very well as you can see it.

Wind S.E., pleasant Eggs: 18 But it is lonely here. Split wood after doing my morning house work and chores at the barn. Mrs. Tucker came to let me know that F. B. Meigs had been through the operation and was resting comfortably. Aunt Hannah called on me. I have felt well today. Got bag of Gold Medal Flour. $1.45. Letters from Camden.

Wed Apr 27 Cloudy Eggs: 13 Don't feel well but eyes feel better.

Thu Apr 28 Pleasant Eggs: 14 Aunt Mary came down here and made pies. Leonard gone.

Fri Apr 29 Eggs:18 Did not do much

Sat Apr 30 Eggs: 16 Cleaned up some. Leonard went to New Haven. Sold 4 lbs. asparagus $.20 per lb, $.80
