Hand Academy was built in 1884 by Daniel Hand, a Madison native, at a cost of $15,000,00 and presented to the Town for use as a secondary school. Its first class of four pupils graduated in 1888. Mr. Hand's generous gift to his town is memorialized in the name of Daniel Hand High School. A plaque set into the southwest corner of Academy Elementary School reminds us that Hand Academy once stood on the same spot.
